Leveling a Bard on The Last Camp from 1 to 65.

The Bard is the fastest-leveling class in EQ when played correctly. Swarm-kiting — pulling 8-20 mobs at once with selo-speed-buffed run, then AE damage-songs them all to death — turns outdoor zones into XP fountains from level 4 onward. No other class generates this much XP per hour solo. Add the constant group demand for haste, mana regen, melee buffs, and CC songs, and the Bard is one of the most-recruited bodies on the server.

The catch is mechanical complexity. Bards play 4 songs at once via "song twisting" — a 3-4 second rotation where you queue songs in sequence to keep four different effects active continuously. The keyboarding is brutal at first; muscle memory takes weeks. Once it clicks, you're doing more for the group (haste + regen + DPS song + ATK buff) than any other class. Bring patience for the learning curve.

Tier-by-tier

1-10 (Newbie)

  • Solo: Newbie yard. Cast Hymn of Restoration after every fight to skill up Singing.
  • Group: Light grouping at 8-10.
  • Common race-class start: Canonical Bard races (Human, Half Elf, Wood Elf, Vah Shir) start in racial city. The Last Camp-only combos like Iksar Bard start in Cabilis and grind in Field of Bone. Dark Elf Bard starts in Neriak and works the Nektulos Forest circuit.
  • Bind at hometown.
  • Buy starter instruments (drum, lute, horn, flute) — each boosts a different song family.
  • Skill up Singing via Hymn of Restoration on yourself constantly.

10-20

  • Solo: Greater Faydark (The Last Camp area, swarm orcs), South Karana (gnoll camp), North Karana.
  • Group: Crushbone Keep, Befallen (haste-buff demand).
  • Camps: Outdoor swarm circuits — Faydark gnolls, Karana plains.
  • Gear: Drum + lute + flute set (each focused-instrument boosts its song family). Studded leather.
  • Selo's Accelerando at 5 — faster running than mob speed. Unlocks swarm-kite forever.
  • Practice the song-twist with 3 songs first; add the 4th once you have rhythm.

20-30

  • Solo: Paludal Caverns (the canonical Bard swarm-kite zone), Lake of Ill Omen.
  • Group: Befallen, Najena, Upper Guk.
  • Camps: Paludal swarm loop, LoIO sarnak swarm.
  • Gear: Cloak of Flames if you can afford it. Improved instruments (Lute of the Howler-tier).
  • Charisma matters — every CHA point modifies your song potency.
  • Learn AE song twist — Hymn + Selo's + DoT song + Slow song.

30-40

  • Solo: Paludal Caverns still works at low end, Oasis (outdoor swarm), Overthere (swarm sarnak).
  • Group: Lower Guk entry, Mistmoore, Sol B outer.
  • Camps: Oasis swarm, OT swarm, LGuk frenzied area.
  • Gear: FBSS, fine quality piercer + 1H slash for melee, full instrument set with focus effects.
  • Bards are now top-tier group demand for AE pull damage.

40-50

  • Solo: Oasis (still works), Overthere, Burning Woods.
  • Group: Lower Guk deep, Sol B interior, Karnor's Castle.
  • Camps: LGuk frenzied, OT swarm, KC torchbearers.
  • Gear: Fungi tunic, Cloak of Flames, Singing Short Sword (Epic 1.0) prep.
  • Begin Bard Epic 1.0 (Singing Short Sword) — a long quest with Plane of Hate, Plane of Sky, Plane of Fear pieces.

50-60

60-65 (PoP cap)

The Last Camp any-race-class race notes

Canonical Bard races are Human (Freeport), Half Elf (Qeynos/Felwithe), Wood Elf (Kelethin), Vah Shir (Shar Vahl). All have racial Bard guilds. The Last Camp unlocks Bard for every race. Iksar Bard is unusual — Iksar are Cazic-aligned and hostile to Mithaniel/Marr Bard vendors; plan a faction grind. Iksar racial regen helps offset constant kite-running mana drain.

Dark Elf Bard worships Innoruuk and works the Nektulos ForestEast Commonlands swarm circuit. Halfling Bard starts in Rivervale — small hitbox helps swarm-kite avoidance. Ogre and Troll Bards start in Oggok/Grobb but suffer from large hitboxes that make swarm-kiting harder; viable but suboptimal. Charisma stat is your damage modifier — pick max-CHA race if min-maxing.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to swarm-kite indoors — Selo's beats mob speed only outdoor.
  • Forgetting instruments — each song family wants a specific instrument focus for full effect.
  • Song-twisting too few songs — twist 4, not 2-3, once you have the muscle memory.
  • Standing in melee with low HP — Bards are silk-armor squishy, kite first.
  • Skipping the Cloak of Flames — it's a defining Bard item from 30-50.
  • Ignoring Charisma — it's your song damage stat, gear for it.
