Indigo Brotherhood is the Freeport thieves' guild — the evil-aligned rogue order that runs the city's organized shadow network out of West Freeport. The Brotherhood handles the work the Dismal Rage won't directly touch: pickpocketing, smuggling, contract theft, contract assassination, and the parallel commerce layer that the Coalition of Tradesfolk doesn't formally see.

The Brotherhood is the canonical home faction for Freeport-trained rogues and the city's standing reservoir of evil-rogue content. Their relationship with the Dismal Rage is informal but stable, and they maintain working ties with the Dark Bargainers for cross-city goods movement.

Lore

The Indigo Brotherhood took its current form during Freeport's mid-history, when the city's split politics opened space for an organized criminal network that could operate without a single dominant patron. The Brotherhood took that space, organized the existing thieves and contract specialists into a recognizable guild, and built the cell structure that lets it survive periodic Freeport Militia crackdowns.

Brotherhood operations span the obvious — pickpocketing tourists, fencing stolen goods, running smuggled cargo through the Commonlands and Nektulos routes — and the less obvious: contract assassination of rival merchants, extraction work for parties that don't want to be seen near Freeport, and the gray-area commerce that the Coalition of Tradesfolk tolerates because it falls below the threshold of formal complaint. Their working relationship with the Dark Bargainers keeps Neriak goods flowing into Freeport and Freeport contraband flowing out.

The Brotherhood's standing fight is with the Freeport Militia — the city's militia order — and the Knights of Truth by extension. This is enforced in Freeport's aggro tables: Brotherhood members and Militia patrols cannot share streets, and a character with positive Brotherhood standing and positive Militia standing simultaneously is in for an interesting routing problem inside the city.

Why grind it

For rogue characters, Indigo Brotherhood standing is the home faction in Freeport — trainer access, fence access, lockpick and poison-component stock, and the contract-tied task chains that gate the rogue progression. Without Brotherhood standing the West Freeport rogue trainers are unreachable for any practical purpose, and the contract task chain — which feeds into rogue gear progression — never opens.

The Brotherhood is also load-bearing for any character who wants to use West Freeport as a hub while running evil-aligned content. Bind, bank, evil merchant access, and unaggro'd movement through the rogue guild precinct all flow off the same standing line. For non-rogue evil characters, Brotherhood standing is the cleanest single-faction unlock for a stable West Freeport foothold.

Notable NPCs

  • Brotherhood rogue trainers — handling the West Freeport rogue progression and contract-tied skill training
  • Fence contacts — Brotherhood-aligned NPCs accepting stolen and pickpocketed items for faction and gold
  • Contract handlers — issuing the faction-gated task chains that gate the rogue gear progression
  • Senior Brotherhood figures — running the upper-tier task chains and Dark Bargainers coordination
  • Brotherhood couriers — moving smuggled cargo between West Freeport, Nektulos, and the Neriak Foreign Quarter

Faction path

+faction

  • Completing Brotherhood contract task chains in West Freeport
  • Pickpocket and contract-style hand-ins to Brotherhood fence contacts
  • Killing Freeport Militia patrols and Knights of Truth NPCs in specific quest contexts
  • Cross-faction Dark Bargainers hand-ins that flag dual-positive

-faction

  • Killing any Brotherhood rogue or fence contact
  • Completing Freeport Militia or Knights of Truth hand-ins targeting the guild
  • Aligning with Coalition of Tradesfolk against Brotherhood interests

The Last Camp any-race-class adjustments

The Last Camp's any-race-any-class doctrine means a High Elf Rogue or a Halfling Shadow Knight can grind Indigo Brotherhood standing and take the same Brotherhood-aligned rewards a canonical evil-human rogue would. The Brotherhood's checks are faction standing only — race-flagged dialog from the trainers and fence contacts is flavor and does not gate trainer access, fence stock, or the contract task chains. Pickpocket-based +faction interactions also work for any class with the skill, regardless of race.
